Poetry at Ensley Jazz House

Ensley Jazz House. There is no sign out front and you won’t find it on google maps, because this is a pop up housed in an office building.

Now, being an East side chick I was a little hesitant. For all my adventure, I have to admit I was sad that my friend couldn’t come with me. Yet, I pressed on and I’m glad I did.

(Plus, I just downloaded the WordPress app on my phone, so I can blog live!  Ignore the typos. You have no idea how many posts never made it this far.)

Guided by the whitty humor of Voice Porter, known around town as the MC of Bards and Brews, the space had a true soulful, homegrown feeling. He opens by asking us what we would do if we owned the stars.

30 plus poets, truth tellers, sages, believers, art lovers, observers,  black, white, and “down” brothers & sisters cozy up  on an otherwise quiet street drinking wine from a twist off bottle.

The room fills to standing room only and volunteers go across the street to borrow chairs.

Through the night, the air fills with the sweet sounds of poetry, music, and dance- evoking every feeling imaginable.

I might even spit something…If the spirit moves me.

Don’t worry if you missed it. Jazz house poetry happens every 3rd Thursday at 6111 9th  Street Ensley at 7pm. Add Voice Porter on Facebook for more details.

Are you ready for the next performer? Say Yeaaaaaah.
Until next time….

Keep flowing Bham.

Sound of Birmingham Underground

Whoa! Am I actually writing a new post?  It’s actually the first one in 2015 and the year is almost over…do you see those honey baked hams flying?!

Ok, seriously:

I went to an event last night that was so fresh that I had to write a post. When something cool is happening in Birmingham, I just get soooo excited that I even want your mama to know.

Before I even tell you what it was just  do me a favor and watch this video:

Do you feel the shivers running down your spine? That tall class of water is local artinista  Jazz’Mine Ja’Nis.

Whoa.

My soul is in love.#soundmate

Mind blown.

(I’m seriously trying to take her to dinner, so she can become my best friend… AND if you are in the mood for a good playlist check out her sound cloud: https://soundcloud.com/artintellmedia)

Where did I find her? At Mic Check 2015.  Continue reading

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner: Cask & Drum Music Festival

I’ve found that there is nothing this city loves more than food, live music, and fundraisers. This is Birmingham, where festivals like Cask & Drum help rock live on. We will the keep the rock alive, but not the chicken.  On any given Saturday, we like football on our t.v. and chicken on our plate.

Saturday, Magic Moments made it possible for local chicken wing aficionados to win a title for best wings at the Cask & Drum Music Festival. Magic Moments has been granting wishes to  children of Alabama  with life threatening or chronic medical conditions since 1984. This year, Magic Moments teamed up with Cask & Drum to put on their annual Kick’n Chick’n Wing Fest fundraiser. Proceeds from this year’s Cask & Drum festival also went to benefit Magic Moments.

Started in 2013, Cask & Drum is a privately funded music festival bringing performances from national talent on two stages. Although Cask & Drum is only in its second year, the event aims to fill a void left by the termination of City Stages years ago.  A part of the festivals focus is music discovery. Todd Coder, a talent buyer for WorkPlay and the festival, brings a good mix of artists who have notoriety around the country, but may be unknown to Birmingham.
